A few years ago, working while traveling felt like a dream.

Now, it’s normal.

All you need is a laptop, internet, and the willingness to leave your comfort zone. That’s the reality of being a digital nomad today.

You’ll see digital nomads working from cafés, beaches, tiny apartments, or even mountains. And honestly, it looks like the perfect life. Work, travel, freedom.

But with so many countries catering to digital nomads, it can be hard to know where to start.

Here are a few countries that are considered some of the best countries for digital nomads in 2026, offering a high quality of life with relatively low living costs.

Thailand

Thailand has always been a popular destination for those looking to emigrate. Not least because the nation offers such distinct experiences. On one side, Thailand offers luxury accommodation, fine dining, and secluded living. On the other hand, you’ll find cheap eats, thriving nightlife, and a digital nomad’s paradise.

Thailand’s year-round tropical climate draws tourists in droves, with many visitors setting up camp in the country permanently. Among them is a huge community of young travelers working remotely from Thai beach bars and cafes.

This growing community means Thailand is home to huge hubs of nomads, making it one of the places to meet like-minded people and expand your network. If this is your motivation for heading to Thailand, you’ll probably be well-suited to places like Chiang Mai and Bangkok

In terms of cost, you could live a great life in Thailand for under $1,500, although you could make a budget of as little as $700 work if need be.

Vietnam

You can think of Vietnam as the new, emerging alternative to Thailand. In terms of experience, Vietnam and Thailand can appear quite similar. There’s a clear crossover in terms of climate, culture, and people. But in terms of differences, Thailand is geared more towards tourism, while Vietnam is the better choice for those looking to explore off the beaten path.

Vietnam is also home to an abundance of co-working spaces, including cafes and office spaces. Where Vietnam really excels, though, is through unbeatable living costs. Food and living are extremely cheap in Vietnam, and you can expect a full month’s costs to be as little as $600 or as high as $1,200, depending on how much of a premium life you want to lead as a nomad.

Portugal

In terms of European nations, it’s hard to compete with Portugal in terms of a digital nomad hotspot. Portugal’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent years with those seeking temporary residence, and a big reason for this is the introduction of the digital nomad visas.

Alongside Portugal making it easier for nomads to set up in the country, the warm weather, stunning beaches, and advanced infrastructure also attract both young nomads and senior communities.

In terms of costs, the capital city of Lisbon does come with more expensive living costs, but living on the outskirts will bring these down drastically. However, if you are looking for a capital city experience, it is worth pointing out that Lisbon can be far more affordable than other major European capitals.

As Portugal’s reputation as a playground for nomads grows, meetups and networking events designed for young remote workers are becoming increasingly popular too, providing a strong social element on top of a high quality of living.

Mexico

For many people, Mexico is a dream holiday destination. But for many young people of today, it’s just another stop on their digital nomad journey around the world, and it’s easy to see why. In terms of living costs, Mexico can be around 50% cheaper than the US and UK in terms of monthly costs. But despite lower costs of living, you’ll be surrounded by historic culture and a world-renowned food scene.

Areas like Mexico City, Playa del Carmen, and Mérida are proving to be particularly attractive to young workers who want to combine remote working with outdoor living. If you like the sound of exploring different places without too much travel, the different areas within Mexico provide the perfect city-hopping route. From golden beaches to ancient ruins, your Mexican experience will be extremely varied depending on whereabouts you are.

Other Factors To Consider

Visa rules

Travel does throw up logistical headaches, and these headaches become even more severe if you are travelling from one country to another. Travel requirements will vary from one place to the next, so it’s important to check ahead of time. The places mentioned above don’t require a visa if you have US or British citizenship.

If you travel frequently, applying for visas can be frustrating.

Atlys simplifies the visa process.

Time zone

Depending on your job, your time zone will likely have a direct impact on your work. Many nomads work freelance jobs, but it’s still important to consider the time zone that your clients will be in. If you’ll be working for a company whilst travelling, it’s worth considering countries that lend themselves well to US or European hours, as this can dictate opportunities. Mexico, for example, lends itself well to working North American hours, which obviously opens up a host of new opportunities in terms of job roles.

Healthcare & Safety

Finally, it’s important to think beyond work. Should you fall ill while travelling, you’ll want to have access to quality healthcare. Regardless of where you are travelling to, carry out some prior research to find out the state of the healthcare system, but also to scout out any areas to avoid due to safety concerns.

Another thing many digital nomads overlook is travel insurance. When you’re moving between countries, plans change often, and things don’t always go as expected. That’s why having something flexible helps.

Services like SafetyWing are built for digital nomads. You can even get coverage after your trip has started and pause or resume it depending on your plans. It covers a large number of countries, and you don’t need to let them know about your itinerary in advance, which is perfect if you’re not sure where you’ll be next month.
